First Stop: An Ancient Ocean
Megalodon’s teeth are from West Java in Indonesia. At around 20 million years ago, areas of land that we have today were warm marine environments. Megalodon sharks inhabited those prehistoric waters, along with a myriad of other types of marine life.
Similar to modern sharks, Megalodon constantly produced and lost teeth. Some of them eventually found their way into marine sediments. If the conditions are right burial could shield them long enough to allow fossilization.
Then geology came in.
The next chapter was extremely slowly. Sediments accumulated. Minerals react with the material that was buried. Geological forces altered the landscape, and submerged environments eventually became part our land. This is why people notice that genuine fossil megalodons are of a variety of hues.
Indonesian specimens found in West Java’s Miocene Bentang Formation can appear with shades of gold or tan, as well as brown, red, and blue. They can also display multiple shades within one tooth. The mineral environment around them contributes to the appearance that a specimen is able to develop during its lengthy burial. Nature is unable to reproduce the effects in the mass. Each fossil has its own geological story.
